Validation/Evaluation

Besides the standard validation such as statistics of analysis increments and error statistics compared to selected independent observations (retained from data assimilation), a special emphasis was placed on precipitation and high-impact weather situations. Bollmeyer et al. (2015) show that the added value of the high-resolution, regional reanalysis compared to global reanalyses can be found in the representation of small scale variability. Especially, the spatio-temporal accuracy of precipitation events, e.g., has been significantly improved compared to a pure high-resolution dynamical downscaling approach without data assimilation. The benefits with respect to precipitation in comparison to ERA-Interim and the HIRLAM regional reanalysis have also been shown in Wahl et al. (2017).
